CHAPTER 4
CrossFit KYBR
In December 2021, our affiliate CrossFit Now closed. I had been an athlete for 5 years, and a coach for 4 years up to that point and the news was hard. I loved that gym, the owners, and the athletes. Together I partnered with my dad, Aubrey, and Aaron to build a new gym. If I were to ever choose a project that’s been my favorite — This was it.
Storytelling at it’s best.
The four of us were huge Star Wars fans, and we’d always say that if we ever got the opportunity to own a gym that we would theme it to a galaxy far, far away. The name KYBR was inspired by the kyber crystal which is the power source in the universe that is used in weapons such as lightsabers and the infamous death star. The gym itself would be the power source used to power the most powerful weapon we know — our athletes.
In the Star Wars universe there are two typographies that are primarily used. We are all familiar with Star Jedi (used for the original logo) but not many know about Aurebesh (unless you’re a glorified nerd such as myself). Next time you’re in Disneyland or DisneyWorld take a trip over to Batuu and take a look around at the shop signs. Speaking of Disney, did you catch the hidden mickey?
I had the honor of being the creative force behind the design of our gym’s logo, as well as the website, graphics, t-shirts, and managing our social media account. Each element was crafted with care to reflect our gym’s identity and vision effectively and paying homage to the films, Batuu, Star Tours and the stories that have left a lasting impression on us.
In addition to the previous designs that were made available on t-shirts through our online shop, I also designed special apparel for the 2023 and 2024 Open Season and a best selling FREEDOM design for 4th of July and the annual MURPH workout.
KYBR was a dream come true, and it always will be.
I want to give a huge shoutout to all the members of KYBR, both past and present, for wholeheartedly entrusting us with your fitness journey. In 2024, my dad and I made the decision to gift our portion of the business to Rebecca and Paul, who we believe will continue to uphold the values we cherish. It was truly an honor and a privilege to serve this meaningful chapter of my life alongside such wonderful individuals.
